“How do they do it?”

This is a common question for those watching our students juggle parenting, school, work and relationships. Short answer? They have help ... and you should too.

Courtney, a single mom, walked into our office with the weight of the world on her shoulders. She had recently begun receiving support from TANF. While grateful for the support during this difficult time, her path forward was unclear.

When Courtney started working with our staff, you could tell she felt hope. There would be light at the end of this tunnel. Support from Workforce Development would allow her to:

  • Receive grants that pay for books and tuition
  • Obtain a work study position on campus for support income and to build work experience
  • Connect to a program offering child care subsidies

Taking steps toward her dreams was no longer impossible. She saw the plan laid out in front of her and was confident in the support of our team.

Fast forward to Summer of 2020. Courtney graduated, passed the Medical Assistant exam with grade of 90%, was offered three full time positions and recently began working in a local clinic. She has transitioned out of the TANF program and is now supporting herself and her child.
