Workforce Development paints a bright future for Culinary Institute student

Kendra invested in her future by seeking new opportunities and using the support systems offered to her. That, quite simply, changed everything.

For a period in her life Kendra experienced housing insecurity. Couch surfing placed a roof over her head some nights but the absence of a consistent living space took its toll. Kendra met a few people in the Workforce Development (WFD) Division at Olympic College. Through these relationships Kendra confirmed her love for hands-on learning and her passion for working with people.

“There are so many faculty and staff willing to help. They care and they show up. Culinary is a phenomenal, hands-on experience!”

Kendra, a Culinary Arts student, sharing her perspective on OC Faculty and Staff.

This led Kendra to the Culinary Arts Institute at Olympic College. You only need to speak with Kendra for a moment to realize the Institute has achieved their goal of “creating an atmosphere of excitement around cooking methodology and outcomes.” The institute offers training in the following specialties:

“Chefs are amazing people!” Kendra says. “Every Friday at Olympic College we serve four course meals.” Kendra goes on to explain what happens behind the scenes of this weekly experience: Breaking down recipes, researching food costs, estimating sales prices, measuring yield and proportions, and so much more are involved in the process of delivering a high-quality meal.

While finishing her education and raising her three boys, Kendra discovered an opportunity to continue to grow in her field by live-streaming her cooking on a platform that allows her to earn an income. This has been the perfect place to practice her skills and replace some of the income lost due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Kendra will graduate this year from her program at the Culinary Institute at Olympic College. When asked what she would say to students who were considering the Culinary Program at OC, Kendra replied, “The culinary program is so worth it! I have learned about sustainability, small business success and culinary excellence. The work is challenging but you will not be alone. There are so many faculty and staff willing to help. It is a phenomenal, hands-on experience. I am so confident in my skills now. I feel great. Now, more than ever before, I am ready for what is next.”

Kendra’s vibrant and compassionate spirit shines bright. We know great things are in store for this soon-to-be alumnus of the Olympic College Culinary Institute.
