This talk will explore the multimedia engagement of Empress Dowager Cixi, de facto ruler toward the end of China's last dynasty. We will examine not only her representation across an array of media new to the latter half of the nineteenth century, but also how she employed the media kaleidoscope to fashion her own political, religious, and diplomatic images.
