Japan, a once homogenous and nationalistic country is now being faced with a rapidly changing world, where diversity and acceptance are spreading far and wide. An island that once seemed to be secluded from the world, it was only a matter of time before the world found its way into the country. This episode of Deciphering Japan, narrated by the journalist Yumi Araki, challenges some of the ethnocentric ideas that seem to still hold a tight grip on Japanese society. Araki, who is herself from a multicultural family, speaks on her personal experiences in Japan and also introduces several biracial communities that are challenging various problems of discrimination that still exist in Japan today. After the film, there will be a discussion on several key concepts of the film.
