Olympic College students selected for All-Washington Academic Team

Three Olympic College students have been selected for the All-Washington Academic Team, a program that recognizes and honors the state’s finest higher education students. All-WA team members receive scholarships of up to $250, recognition at the awards ceremony, and become eligible for All-WA scholarships to public and private universities in Washington.

Students Ashley Leon Guerrero, TeAirra Lawson, and Madeline Seid are Olympic College’s additions to the academic team for 2022.

Ashley Leon Guerrero is a first-generation college student and Chapter President of Phi Theta Kappa at Olympic College. She will be transferring this fall to a four-year university to study psychology.

“My desire to pursue psychology in higher education stems from my personal experiences as well as learning about others not receiving adequate treatment for various psychological illnesses,” she said. “I intend to use my degree to pursue a career as a professional in mental health along with counseling.”

TeAirra Lawson

TeAirra Lawson is in her second and final year at Olympic College and will graduate with an associate degree. She said she has taken courses over the past year that have helped her become more openminded and mindful of others, such as psychology, sociology, gender and women’s studies, Korean, and interpersonal communications courses.

“I’ve enjoyed my time at OC thus far, and once I graduate, I plan to focus on content creating and streaming full-time,” she said.

Madeline Seid

All-WA Top 16 2022

Madeline Seid is a second year Running Start student affiliated with Kingston High School. She joined Phi Theta Kappa last spring, and currently serves as the honor society’s communications officer.

Upon graduation with her AA-DTA, Seid plans to transfer to a four-year university and major in Public Health. She enjoys volunteering in the community and served as a tutor and guitar instructor.

Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for two-year colleges, introduced the ALL-USA Academic Team to recognize and honor two-year college students for their scholastic achievement and community college service. State-level academic teams were introduced in 1994 to provide scholarships and recognition to Phi Theta Kappa members while promoting excellence at two-year colleges. Washington’s state program launched in 1996.

The All-Washington Academic Team is made up of students who “reflect the diversity of the state, maintain high standards of excellence, and contribute positively to the community,” according to the program’s website. “Their stories are often inspiring, sometimes surprising, and always reflective of the larger story of the state’s community and technical college students.”

This year’s All-Washington Academic Team students will be honored at a virtual ceremony, noon, May 12.
