Guyland Charles is Running Toward His Future
Meet track star Guyland Charles in OC’s episode of The College Tour, now on Prime Video. After struggling with self-doubt and depression in high school, Guyland has finally found his stride at OC as a track-and-field and cross-country student-athlete. Now, Guyland said, “I’m running toward my future instead of running from it."
At OC, the wellbeing and academic success of student-athletes is as important as their athletic achievements. Coaches and athletic counselors provide support both on and off the field. And OC is part of the Northwest Athletic Conference, meaning that athletes compete with schools throughout Washington, Idaho, Oregon and British Columbia.
For Guyland, being an OC Ranger hasn’t just boosted his confidence—it’s given him a career path as well. He’s working toward becoming a school counselor to help create a welcoming environment like the one he found at OC. “I never saw a lot of administrators of color,” he said, “so I would like to be what I didn’t have."
