Human Services & Substance Use Disorder Professional

Students completing the Associate in Arts- Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA): Human Services program should work with your advisor and the four-year institution you wish to attend for transfer requirements.

Students completing the Associate in Technical Arts (ATA) in the Substance Use Disorder Professional program can pursue the "Upside Down" Transfer option with The Evergreen State College. You should work with your advisor to ensure you will meet the transfer requirements.  Transfer agreements are not currently in place outside of this particular articulation agreement for the Substance Use Disorder Professional program.

The Certificate of Completion (CC): Human Services Case Aide program and Certificate of Proficiency (CP): Substance Use Disorder Professional program are self-contained and currently not part of any transfer agreements. 

The Certificate of Completion (CC): Substance Use Disorder with Alternative Training (Fast Track) program is designed for working professionals who would like to add this specialization to their training through the Department of Health in Washington State. Practitioners must hold already an active license to be eligible for this training and are limited to the following: 

• Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner
• Marriage and Family Therapist
• Mental Health Counselor
• Advanced Social Worker or Independent Clinical Social Worker
• Psychologist
• Osteopathic Physician
• Osteopathic Physician's Assistant
• Physician
• Physician's Assistant

Certificates of Completion (CC) or Proficiency (CP) are designed to provide entry into a technical or semi-professional occupation or additional training for those already working in a field but desiring advancement.

Employment in the field of Substance Use Disorder Professional Counseling (ATA) requires:

1. 2,500 hours of internship in the related field (placement assistance provided by Olympic College)
2. A passing grade on the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) Examination level 1 or higher, or the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (ICRC) level II or higher Examination. More information can be found on The Association for Addiction Professionals website.
3. Licensure in the state of Washington requires a criminal background check. Individuals should consult the SECRETARY’S LIST OF CRIMES AND NEGATIVE ACTIONS for a list of disqualifiable crimes. As well, students with less than 60 months since release from incarceration, students who have been convicted of felonies in the last 60 months, and students who have received treatment for substance dependency or abuse within the last 36 months should consult with an advisor before embarking on this program.
   1. National Licensure Assistance to apply for, fee payment, and taking the examinations is overseen by the Washington State Department of Licensing. More information can be found at the Washington State Department of Health website.
   2. License must be renewed prior to expiration at the Washington State Department of Licensing either online or by mail. The fee schedule can be found at the Washington State Legislature website.

• List of Classes in the Human Services Program at Olympic College that meet the competencies (A-W) in the Chemical Dependency Professional (WAC 246-811-0303).
• Course Topic Identification: Box 6, pg. 4 - 6  of the Substance Use Disorder Professional (SUDP) application (WAC 246-811-0303)

Olympic College has determined that the Substance Use Disorder Counseling ATA degree, Substance Use Disorder Professional Certificate of Proficiency, and Substance Use Disorder Certification With Alternative Training (Fast Track) meet all of the education requirements for certification as Substance Use Disorder Professionals through the Department of Health in Washington State (WAC 246-811-030).

Olympic College has not made a determination that the Substance Use Disorder curriculum meets educational requirements for licensure/certification outside of Washington state. We encourage students who plan to work out-of-state to check relevant local licensure/certification requirements.
