Olympic College student Kelsey Morgan ventured to Centralia College on July 26 to share her inspirational speech title A Mother's Love. Kelsey was named a top-five finalist at the annual Statewide Inspirational Speech Championships.
"I enjoyed every minute of my experience at the championships." Kelsey said. "I learned so much and would not change any of it for the world."
Kelsey was accompanied by OC Communications Professor Laura Bourmatnov.
Each year, Professor Bourmatnov, who teaches Public Speaking, mentors and prepares standout students for the championships.
"As professor, it is a joy to see my students in a setting, like the statewide championships, where community college students gain valuable experience practicing the art of public speaking," Professor Bourmatnov said.
In 2022, OC student Levi Pixton earned top honors at the competition for his moving speech about his mother, who overcame many obstacles after becoming pregnant at a young age.
Levi, now a WSU graduate, returned to the competition this year as a distinguished alum and past champion, serving as a coach and mentor to the five finalists.
“I'm extremely proud of both of them,” Bourmatnov said. “They have shown the rest of the state the high level of achievement our students are capable of.”
