Professional-Technical Instructor Certification

Guidelines for Washington State Professional-Technical Faculty

Welcome to Olympic College's certification website. The certification process is designed to support professional-technical faculty as they develop, implement, and track a thoughtful, skill-based professional development plan. For full-time, tenure track faculty, the plan can align with professional development activities in your tenure plan.

The certification process includes assessing the skills required for your position; assessing your current skill levels; and, for “initial” certification, determining five professional development activities to complete during your first three years of employment. After initial certification, five professional development activities are required every five years for “standard” certification. Washington Administrative Code 131-16-092 requires that all full-time faculty and part-time faculty who teach a two-thirds full-time load for more than the equivalent of three quarters complete the requirements of initial and then standard certification.

To facilitate the certification process, Washington community and technical colleges use the SBCTC-maintained interactive online database. The first step is to meet with your division dean or the Workforce Development Administrative Assistant about the details of the process. Once you’ve done that, you just log into the website and begin with the Skills Survey/Self-Assessment.

To facilitate the process statewide, the SBCTC maintains an interactive database online. Each instructor completes the same set of steps, customizing the professional development plan based on current position and skill levels.

We've begun the transition to fillable Word forms. This will replace the online system, which has several user unfriendly aspects.

There will be two forms:
 1) Skills survey/self-assessment
 2) Professional development plan (pending)

Each form must be approved by your dean to effect your certification.
