Johnston finishes 5th at NW Championships

01 Tuesday November

KENT – Olympic College Cross Country competed in the Northwest Regional Championships on Saturday.  Freshmen Erika Hettick (Peninsula HS / Purdy, WA) led the Lady Ranger runners with a 5th place finish and a time of 22:33.28 in a race that Head Coach Dan Dittmer called “fantastic.”  The men were led by sophomore Brian Johnston (Klahowya HS / Seabeck, WA), who also finished 5th with a time of 31:44.87.  Both runners were named to the All-North Region 1st team based on their finishes.

“Brain Johnston has put in an outstanding level of work the past two weeks and it really came to fruition as he ran an outstanding race,” Dittmer stated, “It was such a great thing was how well packed our boys were.  There were 72 seconds between 1st and 5th runner. That’s the closest we’ve been all year long.”

That pack included Jack Harvey (So. Central Kitsap), Jeremiah Lambert (So., North Mason), Drake Adams (Fr., Shelton), and Anthony Swenson (So, W.F. West), all of which were named to the All-North Region 2nd team based on their finishes.

On the women’s side, Bailey Larsen (Fr. Olympic) finished 13th overall.  Coach Dittmer noted it was “only her second race of the season.  She’s really coming along and starting to figure it all out.”  Larsen and teammate Briana Power (Fr., Kingston) were also named to the All-North Region 2nd team with Power finishing 14th.

The teams will conclude their seasons at the NWAC Championships, which will be held on the Saint Martin’s University Campus.  Coach Dittmer looks forward to the course, one “we’ve had PR’s on before so I’m looking forward to seeing our kids run really well.”

Details on the NWAC Championships can be found on the NWAC website.  Start times are 11am for men and 12pm for women.
