Apply for Running Start

Information and Application Packet

Download the Information and Application Packet or request a copy from your high school counselor or the Running Start Office.  Review the information carefully and follow the steps below.

Start Early!  Priority Application Due Dates

  • Fall Quarter: May 1
  • Winter Quarter: November 1
  • Spring Quarter: February 1

*Late applications will be accepted up to the Wednesday before classes begin*

Steps to Apply:

1. Submit an OC Application online

Indicate Running Start as your intended major/college program. You will receive an OC Student Identification Number (SID) from the Admission Office.

2. Take the ACCUPLACER assessment

Schedule the assessment for reading comprehension, sentence skills, and mathematics skills. Students with disabilities may contact Access Services for information about assessment accommodations.

Fee:  $20 non-refundable due when you schedule online.

Students may take each section of the assessment twice in one calendar year.  The fee is required each time a student takes the assessment.  There is a minimum wait time of at least 48 hours between testing re-takes.  Placement scores are valid for two years. 

What to bring to your assessment appointment:

  • Your email confirmation
  • A current government or school-issued photo identification
  • Your OC Student Identification Number (SID) or SSN

Students who place into English Composition I (ENGL&101) qualify for Running Start to enroll in college classes other than mathematics.*  To enroll in mathematics classes, student must place into college level math.  College level math placement is not required for Running Start admission.  Review your assessment scores.

* Students who do not place into college-level English and/or math, who want to experience a collegiate environment while continuing to develop their computation and reading/writing skills outside of Running Start may enroll in a limited selection of Olympic College courses identified below:

  • Classes designated as "Skills Performance (H/SP)": Specific ART, DRMA, MUSC courses
  • Physical Education Department Classes:  Any PE-FSP or PE-RD
  • General Studies Department Classes:  Any GEN-S

3. Apply to the Running Start Program

Submit the following materials to the Running Start Office.
