Theoretical Orientation
Olympic College has a culturally diverse student population. I provide a range of counseling services to meet students’ needs in career, vocational, personal counseling and academic advising. In addition to advising new and continuing students, my efforts also focus on issues related to student retention in both academic and vocational programs.
Olympic College students’ counseling issues are multidimensional. In building a trusting relationship with students I incorporate both feelings and compassion with appropriate therapeutic intervention. The methods I utilize during the counseling process are derived from a variety of theories including person-centered, transactional analysis, rational emotive, cognitive behavioral, social systems theory, humanistic, and psychodynamic. I am experienced with the unique academic and personal transitions encountered by military personnel and their family members. I encourage student referrals from faculty who are aware that personal problems often interfere with course completion and academic success.
I counsel students who are experiencing low self-esteem, test anxiety, stress, depression, career/academic indecision, relationship problems, grief and loss, and lifestyle management.
My foundation in career counseling is based on a thorough understanding of Donald Super’s Life Stages of Career Development. I combine career interest testing coupled with personality inventory to assist students with career selection that fits their unique personality and career goals. Students are also instructed in the use of both the WOIS and SIGI career exploration programs as follow-up to individual career testing evaluation. Counseling assists transfer students with four year college and university decisions based on career choices and occupational decisions.
Eligibility & Fees
Both prospective and currently enrolled Olympic College students are eligible for counseling services at no charge. A short-term model is employed and in some cases, referral may be made to an agency or professional in the community. Students have an opportunity to provide written evaluation of each counseling appointment.
