Tammy Helwig begins her first season as the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Olympic College. Coach Helwig will look to rebuild the Ranger Women's basketball program with her local ties.  She currently teaches math and aviation at South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard, Wash. and was an assistant women's basketball coach there the past five years (2004 - 2009) before taking over at OC. Her winning percentage at South was eighty percent. She was an assistant at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor, Wash. from 2000 to 2004.  Helwig has also coached youth programs at Hickam Air Force Base and Maryknoll High School in Hawaii, as well as four years at the high school level in Colorado. 

From Great Falls, Mont. originally, Helwig was a four-sport athlete in swimming, basketball, softball, and track.  Her senior year (1978) she earned all-American status for swimming and basketball from Great Falls High School.  She was also in the fourth class (1980) that allowed women in the Air Force Academy.  Coach Helwig has a background in Physical Education as a teacher, and has coached high school track and field.

Helwig earned her undergraduate degree in Physical Education from Midwestern State University in Texas, and was one of the first women to finish a Master's degree in Sport Administration from the University of Northern Colorado.

Tammy is married to Mark Helwig and has two daughters, 13-year old Toni, and college freshman Taylor (playing basketball at Concordia University).  They currently reside in Gig Harbor, Wash.
