Gurske was a three year starter under Ted Berney on the 1990 league championship football team that finished third in state and under Larry Gallagher on the Bremerton basketball team. Gurske helped lead the knights in back to back league titles and a district title and entered the WIAA 3A State Tourney in 1991 where they ended their season with a 22-0 home record (for two seasons).

After graduating from Bremerton, Gurske attended Walla Walla Community College for a year and played football. He returned to the Bremerton area and attended Olympic College where he studied criminal justice and played under then head coach Barry Janusch. Gurske helped lead OC to the 1995 division championship and led the team in steals.

Since 1998, Gurske has volunteered over 2500 hours as a coach for the Warren Ave Pee Wee Association while his sons were involved in their program. In 2004, he joined the Bremerton High School coaching staff under head coach Larry Gallagher. After completing a successful season as the JV coach he was quickly promoted to assistant varsity coach. For the last nine years, Gurske has been working closely with director and head trainer of Total Package Craig Murray. He leads the 5th thru 10th grade teams and assists with player development, and team concepts in tournaments held in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Nevada.

Coach Gurske is currently employed on campus at Olympic College as a fitness center supervisor. Michael currently resides in Bremerton with his wife Connie and their three sons: Michael, Marquis and Miles.
