Learning Communities Defined
A Learning Community is a linking or clustering of courses around a common theme in which the same students and faculty spend up to 15 hours together each week. This design helps students develop a supportive network of peers and increases connections with faculty, counselors, and advisors to enhance opportunities for success. Learning Communities: Why?
•Because learning communities promote rich academic communities, they have also been shown to increase student retention and persistence.
•Students develop academic skills such as reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking more effectively in the context of a discipline.
•In learning communities, students, particularly underprepared students, have the opportunity to experience a powerful sense of belonging which counters the isolation among community college students that can work against their success.
