SBA Program Overview
SBA Program Format
The Sustainable Building Advisor Certificate Course is a nine-month, specialized training program,
designed to enable graduates to advise employers or clients on strategies and tools for implementing sustainable building. In this program, you will learn knowledge and skills that respond to Washington
state's new high performance for state-funded building and the growing green building movement.

Interactive
Interactive class discussion and rigorous inquiry are integrated throughout the course. Participation is encouraged, since it enhances a cooperative and fun learning experience. In-class exercises and an in-depth group project reinforce technical concepts and support the development of competencies.
Expert Instruction
Experts in their fields present the latest and the proven in sustainable design and in construction and operation techniques, with an emphasis on both practical applications and underlying theories.
Hands-On Exercises
Each unit incorporates work on an in-depth small group project, which reinforces technical concepts and develops competencies in applying LEED™, Living Building™, and other sustainable criteria to the built environment.
Demonstrated Competencies
Written papers for each unit and a final group project presentation are required to document learning and to earn credit.
Field Trips
Site visits to exemplary local projects provide opportunities to test conceptual understanding.
Integrated Approach
Units are fully integrated by the lead instructor to reinforce learning and to provide familiarity with cross-disciplinary aspects of applied sustainability.
Readings
Focused reading selections are assigned to augment learning.
Cross-Sector Applicability
Content (including case studies and project-based exercises) addresses various types of construction (commercial, residential, renovation, and new) and development (greenfield, redevelopment).

Program Benefits
By the end of this program, participants should be able to:
- Identify and discuss key practices of sustainable building
- Establish competencies in applying LEED™, Built Green™, and other relevant criteria and established guidelines
- Analyze the costs and benefits of incorporating sustainable building measures
- Take advantage of financial incentives and technical assistance offered by government, utilities and
- non-profit organizations
- Work with architects, designers, builders, building operators, and utilities to improve a building's performance
- Establish a sustainable design goal for project development
- Assist in the education and training of staff in sustainable building
Schedule for 2011-2012
Classes meet one weekend (Friday and Saturday) per month for nine months.

Fridays, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturdays, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Schedule subject to change.

$1,995 (subject to change)
(STEPP Payment Plan Option: Put a portion of fee down at the time of registration and pay the remainder
