Mathematics Requirements
 

Which mathematics course is right for you?

Mathematics course choice should be based on a student’s long term goal, major or 4-year transfer school. See your faculty advisor or an educational/program advisor when deciding which mathematics course will be best for your transfer goals.

 

Mathematics courses  for AA - DTA Degree

MATH& 107 or above required for your AA degree or AAS degree.

 

  • MATH& 107- Math in Society (Formerly Math 107) may have limited transfer ability in certain majors and at certain schools.
    • A good choice for liberal arts transfer students.
    • UW Note: Meets UW requirement.
    • WWU Note: Currently does not transfer into most majors.

 

  • MATH 112 - Mathematics and the Environment
    • Transfers to the UW like MATH& 107.

 

  • MATH& 141 - Precalculus I: Algebra (Formerly Math 119) may be best for science, math, or engineering majors,  for students who are transferring to WWU, or if the 4 year institution requires it.
    • Note: Students who choose this option and are transferring to UW must take MATH&141 and MATH& 142 Precalculus II: Trig to satisfy Quantitative Reasoning requirements.

 

  • MATH& 144 - Precalculus I and II is primarily for engineering transfer students, qualifying assessment scores are required.

 

  • MATH& 146 - Statistics (Formerly Math 281)

 

  • Math 147- Business Algebra for students interested in studying algebra in an applied context that includes finance, profit/cost/revenue functions, and market equilibrium.

     

    • Math 166 and Math 167- Math Reasoning for Elementary Teachers I and II
      •  Note: Transfers directly to UW, CWU, WSU into their education programs.

     

    • BUS 215- Business Statistics (Formerly Bus 256 & 257) can be used for AA symbolic/quantitative skills if authorized in writing by Business or Economics faculty.


     

    Mathematics courses for AS-T Degree

    MATH& 151, 152, AND 163 for both AS-T Tracks 1 and 2.  MATH& 146 (Statistics) is required for AS-T Track 1 -  Consult with an Engineering or Science Faculty Advisor.

    • Students wishing to pursue degrees in Biology, Environmental/Resources Sciences, Chemistry, Geology and Earth Sciences AND enter Olympic College ready to begin the Calculus series are urged to consider the AS-T Track 1 degree option.

     

    • Students wishing to pursue transfer degrees in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, and Atmospheric Sciences AND enter Olympic College ready to begin the Calculus series are urged to consider the AS-T Track 2 degree option.

     

    Business Majors - Consult with a Business & Economics Transfer Advisor.

     

    • Will likely take Math 147 and MATH& 148 Business Algebra and Business Calculus (Formerly Math 156 & 157) as part of their transfer.
    •  Both courses are required to meet the math requirement in Business for most universities.

     

     

    Nursing Students – Consult with the Nursing Advisor.


     

    • MATH& 146 (Formerly Math 281) Intro to Statistics is a good choice for students who plan to pursue a BSN.
    • BNURS 320 – Statistics for Health Research is restricted to students pursuing a BSN.
