Medical Assisting, Billing and Coding

Medical Assistants are multi-skilled practitioners who perform in a wide range of roles in physicians’ offices and other health care settings.


Students interested in medical assisting may pursue four different career tracks:

Medical Assisting

  • All front office and administrative duties.
  • Take vital signs.
  • Administer injections, venipunctures.
  • Perform diagnostic tests like EKGs.

Medical Receptionist

  • All front office and administrative duties.
  • Manage reception area, set appointments.
  • Manage financial records and patient charts.

Medical Billing and Coding

  • Assign codes to procedures and diagnoses for optimum reimbursement.
  • Apply billing and coding principles to optimize reimbursement.
  • Research and explain insurance coverage to patients and their families; manage patient accounts for billing.
  • Handle all components of claims processing; prepare claims for submission to insurance companies.
