1. How should I prepare for my initial meeting with an advisor?

There are a couple of things you can do prior to your meeting that will be helpful:

  • See what OC has to offer and review OC Degrees and Certificates.
  • Look at the quarterly schedule of classes, The View.
  • Prepare some questions.
  • Bring your Accuplacer assessment scores & Photo ID with you.

2. How will I decide my class schedule for the first quarter?

Once you and your advisor have identified the best degree option for you, then you can decide which classes to take for your first quarter.

  • Here are a few factors to consider when choosing classes:
    • What courses are required for the degree you want?
    • What are your Accuplacer score results?
    • What are the prerequisites for the courses?
    • What courses should be taken in what combination and in what sequence?
    • Which courses would be best if you want to transfer to a 4 year university with your particular intended major?
    • Should you take online courses? Telecourses? Portable course?
    • Which classes are "closed?" What are "wait lists"?

3. What if I am undecided about my educational or career goals?

You can still start taking classes however you would want to actively explore possible career fields. Taking courses that are common degree/program requirements, such as English and math are a good idea. We encourage to take advantage of the many resources on camps to help you choose a career or educational goal.

  • Career Services offer online career assessments, internships and work study programs to help you identify a goal.
  • Counseling Services have tools that will evaluate which professions would match your values, personality, and goals.

4. Who is my advisor?

Most students will meet with an entry advisor for their first quarter unless they are pursuing an Associate of Science Degree. 6. How do I register next quarter?

1. You can find your time to register online about mid-way through your first quarter with OASIS.

2. You can connect with an Entry Advisor for a quarterly PIN or a faculty advisor. Students will not be assigned an advisor but it is best to identify a faculty advisor from the discipline or subject in your area of interest. For instance, if you plan to transfer to a 4-year university and major in Chemistry, your faculty advisor would be someone from the Chemistry department.

3. Get a quarterly PIN from your faculty advisor.

4. Register online. Use your Student ID Number (SID) and your new quarterly PIN.

7. What is my PIN?

  • New students have two PINs, a Global PIN and a quarterly registration PIN. Your global PIN is your birth date without a 0 in single digit months (example 31575). Your global PIN is used for everything except registration, waitlist and payment.

  • An assigned Quarterly Registration PIN will be required to register until you have reached 15 completed credits and they are posted on your transcript. Registration PINs are generated halfway through the quarter and do not count credits that are in progress. If you are only registered for 15 credits and have not completed 15 credits, you will need to meet with an advisor and get your new quarterly PIN so that you can register for the next quarter.

  • One you have 15 completed credits on your transcript, your Quarterly Registration PIN will automatically become your Global PIN.
