Science, Engineering & Mathematics Advising
The advising process at Olympic College is designed to offer guidance to help students enroll in classes, make career choices, select from program options and transfer from OC to a 4-year university. The Quick Start Guides linked above provide step-by-step directions on how to get started or continue with classes at OC. If you want more in-depth directions on the enrollment and advising process, you can refer to the Related Links on the left of this page. (Several of these guides are in process and will be linked at a later date.)
ADVISING STEPS
1. New Student Enrollment
All students new to Olympic College (OC) must follow the New Student Enrollment Steps, including completing any math and English assessments needed and attending a SOAR session, before meeting with the Science, Engineering, and Math (SEM) Advisor. If you have credits in Math, Chemistry or Biology from another college/institution (or AP/CLEP exam results) that need to be evaluated, download this form and submit to the advising center, (Request for Prerequisite Clearance Form, link on left) three (3) or four (4) business days prior to your appointment.
Former OC student? Call Registration and Records (360.475.7200) to change your status to "continuing student".
2. Make an appointment with the SEM Advisor.
Students who plan to transfer to four-year universities/colleges to complete Bachelor’s degrees in science, engineering, and math related fields initially meet with the SEM Advisor. The SEM Advisor helps students determine course selection for the first quarter at OC and assists in developing Educational Plans. Science, engineering, and math related fields include:
- Astronomy
- Biology
- Biotechnology
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Engineering
- Environmental Science
- Geography
- Geology
|
- Mathematics
- Meteorology
- Physics
- Pre-dentistry
- Pre-med (not nursing)***
- Pre-pharmacy
- Pre-physical therapy (not physical therapist assistant)***
- Pre-veterinarian
- Sciences
|
***PLEASE NOTE, the SEM Advisor does not advise for OC Nursing and Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) programs. Nursing and PTA students must attend program info sessions and meet with specific program advisors. (See Health Occupations webpage here.)
After you have followed the New Student Enrollment Steps and are ready to make an appointment for SEM Advising, please call this number, 360.475.7241 to schedule an advising appointment with Krista Beer. Please go on to the next step (3) to gather the proper documents for your appointment.
3. Bring **required documents to your appointment with the SEM Advisor.
- Unofficial transcripts
- Accuplacer scores
- Copy of the degree requirements for the BA/BS program you plan to pursue from the baccalaureate institution of your choice.
**These documents are critical for selecting first quarter classes and creating an Educational Plan. Do not make an appointment with the SEM advisor unless you have completed all the previous steps, or you will need to reschedule.
4. Submit your Educational Plan to your Faculty Advisor and make an appointment with him/her for plan approval.
After an initial meeting with the SEM Advisor, SEM students are referred to Faculty Advisors, who are instructors within their chosen disciplines of study (chemistry, engineering, physics, etc.) for Educational Plan approval.
All students seeking degrees or certificates from OC must have Educational Plans approved by Faculty Advisors prior to registering for the 45th credit.
SEM students work with Faculty Advisors until graduating from OC and transferring to four-year universities/colleges to complete SEM related Bachelor’s degrees.
5. Graduate with your Associate of Science degree and transfer to a four-year university/college.
When you are getting close to finishing your Associate of Science degree, make an appointment with your Faculty Advisor to have him/her sign off on your graduation application. Bring a copy of your degree worksheet to the appointment. If you don’t know who your Faculty Advisor is, email kbeer@olympic.edu, and you will be assigned a faculty advisor within your specific discipline of study.
