Which students should be referred to General Studies courses?

Through your interactions with students, you may meet some who you believe would benefit from an opportunity to develop or strengthen their study skills and/or self management skills.

A wide range of students would benefit from taking a General Studies course. Do you know of any students who:

  • Have been out of school for awhile and would like to refresh their study skills?

  • Have recently graduated from high school, have had only moderate academic success, and want to fine tune their study skills?

  • Are unsure of what to expect from their college experience, both in and out of the classroom?

  • Do not know how to use the Internet and the college library resources to conduct research?

  • Are interested in exploring ways to become more efficient and more effective in their learning i.e. how to ìlearn

  • Have to juggle a job and/or family responsibilities along with their studies, and are not sure how to manage it all?

As you have gotten to know students through your classroom or offices, you may have identified areas of skill, knowledge, or attitude in which students appear to have a lack of awareness or understanding. If you have any ideas for topics that you think may be beneficial to incorporate into the General Studies curricula, please feel free to share them. We will keep a compilation of your ideas and observations and make them available to instructors or staff who may be interested in seeing them.

Find out about data regarding OC students who have completed the General Studies courses

The Student Success and Retention Committee has performed some limited data analysis on OC students who have completed the General Studies 100 Strategies for Academic Success course. The students completed surveys which questioned them about various aspects of their experiences with the course, their perceptions of the benefits of having taken the course, and the impact of this course on their intentions to continue in their college education.
