GEN-S 101 Orientation to College: All new students are encouraged to register for this informative class.

Item # 5504

Register for this 1-credit class that meets on Saturday, January 7 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. You will also have an additional assignment due later in the quarter.


This is a fun class, taught by instructors dedicated to student success. We use interactive classroom activities, campus tours, guest lecturers, and small group discussions to keep the energy up. You will meet other OC students and see firsthand the great diversity on campus. You will be introduced to the Angel online learning platform where you will turn in your final assignment. Plus you'll make connections with faculty and staff, and earn one credit! 

You will learn:
  • Strategies for transitioning to college and explore what services are available on campus to help you succeed.
  • How to apply technology to your learning process and how to find resources online and in the library.
  • How to develop an educational plan and keep up with your academic planning.

General Studies 095 (0 credits)
Identify degree and certificate programs, learn how to navigate Olympic College's advising and registration processes and plan for graduation. For all new degree-seeking students.

General Studies 099 Introduction to Academic Study Skills (2 credits)
This course helps students develop academic and workplace readiness skills, critical thinking strategies, self-discovery techniques, and self-management tools. This course is linked to ENGL 091.

General Studies 101 Orientation to College (1 credit)
Newly entering students develop an understanding of their role as students, identify campus resources, identify learning options, and develop an academic plan.

General Studies 102 Math Study Skills (2 credits)
Covers Math discomfort, note-taking, homework, textbook study, learning styles, test preparation, language of mathematics and problem solving. Prerequisite: concurrent enrollment in a mathematics course recommended.

General Studies 105 Strategies for Success (2 credits) 
Identify useful learning strategies; improve academic skills and self-awareness; recognize the important role of diversity; define educational/career goals. This course is linked to ENGL 098. (note, this course was formerly numbered General Studies 100)

General Studies 110 Research in the Information Age (2 credits)
An introduction to information literacy and technology, including the development of academic research skills, critical thinking skills in locating, evaluating, and using information effectively, and use of Web 2.0 tools. Covered are many of the ethical, legal, and socioeconomic issues surrounding information. 

General Studies 120 Leadership in Society (2 credits)
Students develop an understanding of the purpose of leadership, their unique leadership style, and how to apply leadership concepts and styles in a variety of contexts.

General Studies 130 Dependable Strengths Process (2 credits)
Use a writing and dialog process to assess and articulate personal strengths and abilities. Designed to facilitate goal-setting for people experiencing career and life transitions.

General Studies 140 Career Planning/Life Exploration (1 credit)
Identify interests and values in relationships to the world of work. Establish or change career goals and learn skills for ongoing career and life planning. Determine the effects of outside variables to see the impact on career choices.

General Studies 163 Psychology of Self-Esteem (1 credit) 
An examination of the sources of self-esteem and the multi-cultural factors that affect self-esteem.
