This is a security update concerning the OC student who was charged Wednesday with making threats to Olympic College. We have received permission to release his identity. His name is Joseph Vannett (photo below), and he remains in custody as of this notice. Should he be released from custody, the college will be notified and we will resume increased security visibility—including the presence of Bremerton police officers.
Mr. Vannett is barred from being on campus or attending any college functions. Individuals who violate a legal trespass notice are subject to immediate arrest. Mr. Vannett has also been given an order by the court not to contact the college. If you see him on campus or a college event (unaccompanied by security or police), please 1) call 911 to report an individual in violation of a trespass order; and 2) call Campus Safety and Security (475-7800).
We will continue to provide updates of this situation as information is available. If you have any concerns about your personal safety or have questions or concerns about this information, please contact Dr. Rick MacLennan, VP of Student Services, at 360.475.7476.

The college was notified late this morning that the OC student arrested and taken into custody last week was officially charged at 9:15 a.m. in court today with a felony for threats the student made about the college. (Please Note: Information reported recently by the Kitsap Sun on the date the charges occurred and the amount of bail was incorrect.) The student’s trial date is set for July 13, 09. If the student is unable to post bail of $50,000, the student will remain in custody until trial. The college will put in place increased security visibility (including the presence of Bremerton police officers) if the student is released on bail. The college will be immediately notified if the student is released and posts bail.
As mentioned previously, the student is barred from being on campus or attending any college functions. The only exception is permission to attend a hearing which may be scheduled pending the outcome of the court charges. In the event a hearing is held, the student will be accompanied by law enforcement and security personnel.
We have received many questions as to why the college has not released the name of the student. Because the student is involved in an Olympic College student conduct disciplinary action, the college has been advised by the state Attorney General’s office not to share the student’s identity and information. We realize it is essential to keep the college community and public informed, so we will continue to share all information we know that does not provide the student’s identity and the college’s disciplinary action.
Updates will be provided about the situation as it becomes available. The college is aware of the anxiety this type of event and communication can cause. If you have any concerns about your personal safety or have questions or concerns about this information, please contact Dr. Rick MacLennan, VP of Student Services, at 360.475.7476.
