ProQuest is a company that aggregates the full text of thousands of magazines, academic journals, trade publications, and newspapers. ProQuest databases are useful for researching topics in almost all areas of study, e.g. Business, Science, Social Sciences, and Humanities. EbscoHost, a content aggregator similar to ProQuest, brings together thousands of magazines, academic journals, and trade publications. We subscribe to 4 EbscoHost databases which may be searched separately or simultaneously.

ERIC is a growing digital library of education literature--early childhood through adult. It covers many aspects of education, including parent education, and educational psychology, home schooling, social problems, counseling, communications, curriculum, politics, and more. ERIC is published by U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences.


Olympic College Libraries' Periodical Holdings
Use this site when you know what journal you are looking for (e.g. I want the June 2004 issue of "Nursing Times"), but aren't sure which database to look in or which library to contact. Also use it to identify want journals are available in a specific discipline (e.g. I want to see which journals I can get that cover the field of Education).

OCLC FirstSearch

Through OCLC FirstSearch you have access to a family of twelve databases. Olympic College's holdings can be displayed up front, so you can easily identify items in our collection. Two OCLC databases of particular interest are:

PubMed
Use PubMed to search MEDLINE, the U.S. National Library of Medicine's database covering the fields of medicine and nursing. MEDLINE indexes over 4,000 journals from more than 70 countries. Some access to full text is available, but many items appear in summary form only.

PubMed Central
A subset of PubMed, PubMed Central gives you open access to the full text of over 400 life sciences journals.

Science.gov
"Science.gov is a gateway to authoritative selected science information provided by 12 U.S. Government agencies, including research and development results. Science.gov brings together, through one interface, reliable resources selected by the respective agencies as important science information. Easy access options are provided through a search feature, a deep Web search feature for more detailed information, and a browse feature. Science.gov is the official USA.gov for Science Cross-Agency Portal."

AccessScience  New!
This is a great place to begin a research project if it involves any aspect of science or technology because you get authoritative, up-to-date overview articles. The “Study Center” portion of the site provides an essay topic finder for students who are undecided about the focus of their research.

The African American Experience New!
A collection of full-text reference works, monographs, and primary sources covering almost every aspect of African American history and culture.

Britannica

For any research project, nothing beats an article from Britannica to serve as an overview. Britannica will also lead you to academically-vetted Web content, as well as full-text magazine articles. Because of the breadth of content, some students use Britannica as a one-stop destination for all their needs, especially for shorter assignments. Watch out for a European bias here, because some topics unique to the U.S. get ephemeral treatment.

CultureGrams
Description of cultures in 187 countries in short reports that include maps and statitiscs.

Encyclopedia Americana
Includes access to Grolier Online Passport, which is designed for the K-12 audience. 

Historical Statistics of the United States
"The standard source for the quantitative facts of American history."

International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences

Covers a total of 39 categories including the traditional fields of the social and behavioral sciences, such as anthropology, economics, political science, psychology and sociology.

The Latino American Experience New!
A collection of full-text reference works, monographs, and primary sources covering almost every aspect of Latin-American history and culture.
 
Nature Encyclopedia of Life Sciences

Contains over 3,000 authoritative articles on all areas of life science. Includes introductory and advanced articles, as well as keynote articles on controversial topics.

Oxford Reference Online

This "Premium Collection" includes 100 dictionary and reference titles as well as 18 Oxford Companions from Oxford University Press. Content ranges from short, facutal summaries to scholarly articles. Subject coverage is broad and includes law, history, literature, politics, philosophy and Shakespeare. It also provides links to reputable Web sites.
