Journals & Databases

Articles in magazines cannot be found using the library catalog; you need to consult magazine indexes.

The specific index for your field is titled Art Index. ( It has a dark gray binding and is located in the Reference Area of the Haselwood Library after the New York Times Index.) Another, more general index that does cover some art magazines is available on computer. Olympic College Libraries provide databases to help you research articles. However, our databases cover a variety of general magazines as well the basic art magazines, so you may need to use the more art-oriented and inclusive Art Index . Whatever index you use, it is a simple process to check out a magazine from us when the article you need is owned by any of the Olympic College Libraries.

When we don't have what you need, you still have options. Art Index covers many more art magazines than we can afford to buy, but many of those magazines are still available to you. See the next section on Interlibrary Loans .

Interlibrary loans . If you find articles in the Art Index that we don't have, ask for an interlibrary loan . Interlibrary loan (good for both books and magazine articles). We will borrow the material from another library that owns what you need. However, START YOUR RESEARCH EARLY. It takes about l0-l4 days to complete an interlibrary loan. [Note: Magazine articles are copied and mailed to us; you will NOT get the article in color.]

Where else can you turn? There are many good collections of art materials in the Puget Sound area. Most of the four-year schools have good collections, with the University of Washington's Art Library being the best (of course). Kitsap Regional Library (our local public library) has some art material which you may look at on line. If you would like to visit the University's Art Library, maps, bus information, and driving instructions are all available from your librarian!
