                      Firefighting Training

Portable Fire Extinguishers

This 4-hour course will familiarize students with the proper application and performance of various potable fire extinguishers. The course stresses proper handling, application and extinguishing capabilities of dry chemical extinguishers, carbon dioxide extinguishers, stored pressure water and AFFF extinguishers.
Prerequisites: None.

General Shipboard Fire Fighting

This is a basic one-dayfire-fighting course that is four hours classroom and 4 hours of live fire training. The classroom sessions include chemistry of fire, personal protective equipment, SCBA, portable fire extinguishers and fire team organization. The field exercises include a wild hose demonstration with recovery procedures, weapons fires, interior fire attacks and portable fire extinguisher training. This course is very hands-on, enabling each student to fight several fires.

Shipboard Fire Fighting Team Training

This one-day course is designed for organized shipboard firefighting teams. The first half of the day is spent in the classroom. Classroom topics include firefighting tasks, fire team organization, de-smoking equipment and procedures, personal protective equipment, SCBA. After lunch there is a complet dry run of a shipboard general emergency without fire. After an in-depth debrief, a live fire evolution is conducted. This course is outstanding for building fire team proficiencies and promoting teamwork.

Advanced Shipboard Fire Fighting

This is a four day course that stresses in-depth firefighting tactics and equipment use. The course combines classroom sessions with hands-on applications. Several general quarters drills with numerous fire scenarios are conducted. A mass conflagration drill is conducted on Day Four. Other hands-on sessions include operation and use of the PECU, active and post fire de-smoking evolutions and fighting fires with the P-100.

General Shipboard Damage Control

This one-day course is a basic damage control course that teaches individuals all of the basic requirements to conduct successful damage control evolutions in a controlled environment. One classroom session is given on investigation of damage. Hands-on training sessions consist of shoring principles and layout, applications of plugging and pipe patching, and dewatering evolutions. A wet battle problem is conducted during the afternoon training session. All students must bring a complete change of clothing and a towel. Boots will be provided.

Damage Control Team Training

This one day course is designed for organized damage control teams. Topics include investigation of damage, shoring, plugging, patching and de-watering. A wet battle problem is conducted during the afternoon training session. All students must bring a complete change of clothing and a towel. Boots will be provided.

40 Hour Hazardous Waste Site Worker (Hazwoper)

This is a 40-hour waste site worker course that meets the requirements of 29CFR 1919.120.  The curriculum is authored and sponsored by the HMTRI. Topics covered in the course include regulations overview, site characterization, hazard recognition, toxicology, chemical awareness, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, decontamination, medical surveillance, radiological hazards, material sampling, air monitoring, emergency procedures, confined space and excavation. There are several hands-on evolutions.

24 Hour Emergency Response

This is a three-day course that trains the students to conduct coordinated response to release of hazardous substances based on their employer’s plans and OSHA regulations. Topics include toxicology, chemical awareness, monitoring equipment, personal protective equipment, safety, confined space entry, site control, decontamination, incident command, industrial spill response and environmental spill response. Several hands-on evolutions and drills are included.

8 Hour Hazardous Waste Site Worker (Hazwoper Annual Refresher)

This is a one-day course that meets the requirements of 29CFR 1910.120 for annual refresher training. Topics include toxicology review, MSDS exercise, respiratory review, PPE review, site control, decontamination and hands-on activities.
