About this year's event:

Experience the Excitement of Educational Excellence!

In Spring ’09, OC Welding students tested their mettle by testing their metal. For the first time ever, OC students went head-to-head with leading national and international universities in the Superbowl of design and engineering competitions, nicknamed the Mini Baja.

The enterprising students, under the leadership of OC faculty, built a vehicle at the OC Weld Shop and competed in a challenging race with leading universities, such as Cornell, Cal Poly Tech and UCLA. While the OC welders may not have had the same resources as other competitors, they had something better...YOU!

Your donated dollars helped support OC students to compete on a national level and experience educational excellence.

Foundation Offers $500,000 in Support of OC

by Chris Carter

As Olympic College braces for deeper financial cuts, the college's foundation office offered up some much-needed assistance in the form of half a million dollars over the next biennium.
In a surprise gesture, OC Foundation Board President Tracy DiGiovanni handed the college's Board of Trustees a copy of a resolution adopted last week that is chock full of support and monies.
More importantly, nearly half of that money is labeled as discretionary spending meaning that the college can do virtually whatever it wants, including softening the budget blows dealt by Olympia.
"It's amazing," said trustee Alice Tawresey at Tuesday's board meeting. "This money couldn't come at a better time."
The resolution, which was passed Thursday, stipulates that for the 2009-2010 school year, the college will receive $125,000 for "unrestricted and designated budget support" with an additional $125,000 "to maintain ongoing support of Funds for Excellence, Program Support, Discretionary Fund, Scholarships and Grants."
The money is set to repeat for the same purposes the following year.
"This is so that the college can know, going into this trying financial time, what exactly the foundation can commit to," said Foundation Executive Director Joan Hanten.
Some of the money is also set aside to fund various projects on all three campuses including work on the Haselwood Library.

OC Foundation Auction at Anthony's Raises Funds for "Filling in the Gap"

On March 1, 2009 the OCF held its second annual brunch and auction at Anthony's restaurant on the waterfront in downtown Bremerton. This year, the Foundation asked guests to give generously to establish a fund to help fill in the gaps in the budget due to decreases in State funding. The mardi gras themed event raised $36,000 in support of Olympic College students and programs.

Thank you to all of our generous sponsors and donors!

Former Student Donates Hank Blass Drawing to Olympic College

Olympic College alumnus Jim Allen donated a 1962 Harrison “Hank” Blass pen and ink drawing to the Olympic College Foundation. Mr. Allen, a former student, employee, and friend of Blass, told foundation staff that he is happy that the drawing is now “home.” Mr. Allen hopes that preservation of this drawing and other Blass works like the “Progression of Man” mural, recently saved from demolition by Drury Construction, will help show the rich and diverse history of the Olympic College art program. Mr. Allen attended OC from 1966-1968, he was also an employee in the Art Department: “I made $1.00 an hour”. He fondly remembers Blass as a “motivator with an inimitable style of doing things” who was “soft as a puppy” and “just amazing” once you got to through the hard exterior. Mr. Allen is a Bremerton native and occasionally shows his art locally.

Established in 1993, the Olympic College Foundation seeks philanthropic gifts for student scholarships, program enhancements, capital projects, as well as cultural events and activities that benefit the college community. By securing contributions to the College, the Foundation provides that extra measure of support that contributes to excellence at Olympic College.

However, 50% of them had endowment fund balances of less than $525,000. Of the other 50% with endowment fund balances in excess of $1 million, only 25% of those had balances exceeding $2 million (the average fund value was $2.1 million).
